Government Fit For Work Service

Human Resources 10th February 2015

Employers can struggle with managing sickness absence, especially the question of whether and when to involve health professionals and the potential costs of this.

The Government’s free Fit for Work service is now open for business.

The website resources and advice line are up and running and worth a look.  Topics range from “heath assessments for night workers” to “how do I know my employee is ill” and “working from home whilst off sick”.

The occupational health referral facility is still in pilot stage, it is expected to roll out across the UK later this year.  It will give access to occupational health professionals for employees who have been off sick or who are likely to be off sick for four weeks or more. The occupational health professional will identify obstacles preventing the employee from returning to work and produce a Return to Work Plan tailored to the employee’s needs. Referrals will normally be made by GPs but employers may also be able to refer an employee, if after four weeks of absence, they have not been referred by their GP.  This will be welcome support for employers who want to manage absence proactively and get their staff back to work where possible.
